The women in these photographs engage in the ritual of going away together to a cabin in northern Minnesota. This is a recreational place, where each woman can let go of her daily cares and responsibilities. People are drawn together to enjoy the landscape and each other. The women are invigorated by the physicality of being outside and in the company of each other. But while the group is vital and omnipresent, the individual also seeks isolation. There is a solace in having an opportunity to turn inward, to be alone with your own silence commingled with the texture and sounds of the landscape around you. In some ways, moments in these natural settings affect the way these women see themselves and the way that I see them.
